Plagiarism
SUBMISSION POLICY
The Jurnal Desain dan Arsitektur (DESA) uses TURNITIN as a tool to evaluate plagiarism in all manuscripts submitted to the editorial team. Before a manuscript is distributed to peer reviewers, it will first be screened. Manuscripts are allowed to have a maximum similarity index of 20%. If the similarity exceeds this limit, the manuscript will be returned to the author with the following considerations:
- REJECTED if the similarity is above 50%; or
- REVISED and RESUBMITTED if the similarity is between 20–25%, after which it will be rechecked upon resubmission.
This plagiarism screening process is carried out as part of the responsibility of the Jurnal Desain dan Arsitektur (DESA) to ensure that all articles processed are suitable for publication.
Any material taken verbatim from other sources must be clearly distinguished from the original text by:
(1) indentation,
(2) the use of quotation marks, and
(3) proper source identification.
Any text exceeding fair use standards (defined here as more than two or three sentences or their equivalent), or any graphic material reproduced from other sources, requires permission from the copyright holder and, where possible, from the original author, along with proper source identification (e.g., prior publication).
Categories of Similarity Levels:
- Minor: Short sections from other articles are plagiarized without significant data or ideas being taken.
Action: The author is given a warning and requested to revise the text and provide proper citation. - Moderate: A substantial portion of the paper is plagiarized without appropriate citation of the original source.
Action: The submitted article will be rejected, and the author will be prohibited from submitting articles for one year. - Severe: Most of the paper is plagiarized, involving reproduction of original results or ideas presented in other publications.
Action: The paper will be rejected, and the author will be permanently banned from submitting articles.
To maintain manuscript quality in terms of citation of books, journals, and other sources, the editorial team of Jurnal Desain dan Arsitektur (DESA) consistently uses MENDELEY to ensure proper and accurate referencing. A minimum of 15 references is required to ensure that manuscripts are written based on diverse scholarly sources.
OTHERS:
- If self-plagiarism by the same author is identified, the Editorial Board will determine the appropriate action. Subsequently, the author will be permanently banned from submitting articles to DESA.
- This policy also applies to materials reproduced from previous publications by the same author. If an author uses text or images previously published, the corresponding paragraphs or figures must be clearly identified, and the original publication must be cited. However, it is preferable to modify images or tables to avoid plagiarism.
- Authors must identify the sources of previously published materials and obtain permission from the original authors and publishers, including permissions for interview sources.
- If an author submits a manuscript to DESA simultaneously with submissions to other journals, and the same manuscript is later found published elsewhere, joint action will be taken by DESA and the other journal. This constitutes serious plagiarism.
- If an author wishes to reuse previously published materials to clarify the presentation of new results, the prior materials must be clearly identified, and the differences from the current publication must be stated. Permission to republish must be obtained from the copyright holder.
- In cases where a manuscript was originally published in conference proceedings and is later submitted to DESA in identical or expanded form, the author must identify the conference proceedings, publication date, and obtain permission to republish from the copyright holder. The editor may decide not to accept the paper.
- Authors are allowed to use materials from unpublished presentations, including visual displays, in subsequent journal publications.
- If a submitted publication was originally published in another language, the author must identify the original title, publication date, and journal, and obtain copyright permission.
The layout editor of Jurnal Desain dan Arsitektur (DESA) is responsible for maintaining a list of sanctioned authors. If a banned author is identified, the layout editor will notify the Editor-in-Chief, and appropriate action will be taken.
The plagiarism policy is published on the DESA website along with manuscript submission instructions, and a copy will be sent to authors via confirmation email upon initial submission. At the end of the process, authors will be required to sign an Ethical Clearance Code Statement and Copyright Agreement, indicating that they have read and understood the Plagiarism Policy.
