Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of finding out how students of the Independent Student Exchange (PMM) program at University of Djuanda can apply adaptive communication when facing culture shock to the culture in their new environment, namely Bogor. The informants experienced different culture shocks covering aspects of language style, food, weather, lifestyle and personal factors. The results obtained show that there are different ways from the informants to overcome the culture shock experienced, this includes acceptance of the new environment, adjustment and starting new habits. This study aims to add insight and find out what is experienced and how PMM students overcome it. This study used a descriptive qualitative research approach with data collection techniques conducted by interviewing seven PMM students from outside Java. This study draws the conclusion that there is a connection between the necessity of adapting communication and the problem of culture shock faced by the informants. PMM students overcome this by understanding themselves, adjusting to the environment they live in, respecting other cultures and approaching new friends.
