Abstract
This study investigates the nonverbal communication practices experienced by Indonesian internship students in Japanese companies during the 2023–2024 period, with internship durations ranging from six months to one year. The research aims to identify the types of nonverbal communication employed, the contextual circumstances under which they occur, and the challenges faced by interns in adapting to a cross-cultural work environment. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, this study draws on participant observation and in-depth interviews with selected internship participants. The findings indicate that interns encountered significant challenges in interpreting and adjusting to Japanese nonverbal norms, particularly in facial expressions, body gestures, and the use of personal space. The study identified 19 common nonverbal gestures and 4 gestures categorized as informal or slang. These results underscore the critical role of nonverbal communication in intercultural interactions and highlight its implications for the development of intercultural competence and the success of students in international work settings.
