Abstract

This study aims to describe the national interest of the United States in recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and how the impact of the recognition. The status of the city of Jerusalem itself is under international authority based on the resolution of the UNSC number 181 (1947) and is given a separate body and political status. This resolution also mandates the establishment of an Arab (Palestinian) state and a Jewish state (Israel), both for Palestinian and Israel have independent status.

The National Interest theory is used in this study, this is related to the policies adopted by the United States in the effort to fulfill its national interests. The research method is qualitative. Most of the data collected through library research, observation, documentation and online data retrieval. The research was conducted at the American Embassy for Indonesia in Jakarta and Center for Strategic and International Studies Indonesia in Jakarta.

The results showed that the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital by the United States is an effort to fulfill the country's national interest, this has an impact on relations between the two
countries which are getting closer after the recognition. Under Trump's leadership, for the first time America recognized Jerusalem as the Israel’s capital and moved the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This recognition also received rejection from various international actors.
