This analysis was based on qualitative research, and data was collected through the documentation method and a note-taking technique. After collecting all relevant data, the data were analysed using the descriptive qualitative method. The data source was the utterances of Meilin, the main character in "Turning Red," the movie. This article analysed the data using the types of illocutionary acts theory proposed by Searle (1979) to categorise and analyse the collected data into five groups: declarations, assertive, expressive, directives, and commissives; and the approach proposed by Yule (1996) to determine and analyse direct and indirect illocutionary acts. Based on the result of the analysis, there were only four types of illocutionary acts used by Meilin in the movie: assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive. Assertive was expressed 17 times, directive was expressed 20 times, commissive appeared 9 times, and expressive appeared 2 times. In this analysis, no declaration acts were found because there were no utterances by Meilin that contained utterances to declare something. Therefore, the analysis also found that direct speech was the type most often expressed by Meilin; it was expressed 25 times, while indirect speech was only expressed 23 times. She mostly expressed her utterances directly because that is the easiest way to communicate with the listener.

Keywords: Illocutionary acts, Types of illocutionary acts, Direct and indirect acts
Ketut Monica Widyasari Ni Wayan Sukarini Sang Ayu Isnu Maharani ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2024-02-27 2024-02-27 13 1 1 10 10.34010/apollo.v13i1.9675 The Fulfillment of Need Main Character Lina in the Novel between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys https://ojs.unikom.ac.id/index.php/apollo-project/article/view/9665
The title of this research is the fulfillment of Need Main Character Lina in the Novel Between Shades of gray by Ruta Sepetys. This study focused on the language style particularly to identify and analyze the type language style and function of language in Peter Parker’s utterances. The object of this study is Peter Parker’s utterances in the “Spider-Man” movie. This study used observation and documentation methods with taking note technique in collecting data. The data was analyzed using descriptive qualitative methods, means the results are explaining descriptively. The results of the analysis are presented in informal method. This study used two theories; the theory of type of language style proposed by Joos and the theory of function of language proposed by Jakobson. Based on the theory, the type of language style in this study shows three types of language style. There are formal style, consultative style, and casual style. In this study, there are types of language style which is not found, namely frozen style and intimate style. These types of language style do not exist because in the movie, the situations and Peter Parker’s utterances does not contain frozen style and intimate style. Meanwhile, the function of language in this study shows four functions of language. There are phatic function, conative function, referential function, and expressive function. There are two functions of language that are not in the movie, namely poetic function and metalingual function because it does not match the contents of the story and Peter Parker’s utterances. The result shows that Peter Parker used more casual style to communicate with other characters and expressive functions, which aimed to express Peter Parker’s emotions and feelings.

Keywords: Sociolinguistics, Type of language style, Function of language
Intan Sintia Putu Weddha Savitri Ni Wayan Sukarini ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2024-02-27 2024-02-27 13 1 17 28 10.34010/apollo.v13i1.9706 Didactic Value in Disney's Movie Turning Red https://ojs.unikom.ac.id/index.php/apollo-project/article/view/9745
This study analyzes the didactic value in the Turning red film by using a classification that divides it into: religious value, social value, moral value, and cultural value. This research finds the binary opposition between these characters and uncovers their meanings, drawing upon Levi Strauss’s theory of binary oppositions. The descriptive qualitative method is employed, and scenes and English subtitles from the Wednesday Addams series season 1: episodes 1 and 4, available on Netflix, are used as the data source. The research identifies four opposing mental states: darkness and lightness, taciturnity and talkativeness, rigid and flexible, and indifference and care. Wednesday Addams exhibits unique mental states compared to other characters, particularly Enid, her best friend. Each of these four opposing mental states carries meaning beyond their mental states.

Keywords: Binary Opposition, Mental State, Characters, Character’s Meaning
Nisrina Dewi Ambarwati Tatan Tawami ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2024-02-27 2024-02-27 13 1 39 50 10.34010/apollo.v13i1.12268 Semiotic Analysis on Verbal and Visual Signs in Cyber Safety Poster https://ojs.unikom.ac.id/index.php/apollo-project/article/view/9733
The title of this research is Semiotic Analysis on Verbal and Visual Signs in Cyber Safety Posters. There are two aims of this study. They were to find out the types of verbal and visual signs and describe the meaning and function of verbal and visual signs in cyber safety posters. In this study, a cyber safety poster was discussed. The poster won the golden prize in the 2013 Information Security Awareness Video & Poster Contest. The data were collected from the posters using documentative and note-taking techniques. After the data were collected, they were descriptively analysed based on the Semiotic theory proposed by Pierce (in Chandler, 2007) and the theory types of meaning and function proposed by Leech (1981). The data analysis was presented through formal and informal methods. The result of the analysis showed that verbal signs dominated the poster. Then, based on the Semiotic theory proposed by Pierce, three sign classifications were found in the data. They were 4 signs classified as Rhematic Indexical Sinsign, 2 signs were (Rhematic) Iconic Sinsign, and a sign categorised as Rhematic Symbol (ic Legisign). The result indicated that the cyber safety posters dominantly used Rhematic Indexical Sinsign, a sign based on real experience. Meanwhile, based on the theory types of meaning and function proposed by Leech (1981), the analysis showed that there were 4 conceptual and 3 connotative meanings, 4 informative and 3 directive functions. It meant that conceptual meaning and informative function were the dominant types used in the Cyber Safety poster.

Keywords: Semiotics, Verbal, Visual, Sign, Poster
Ni Komang Widianti I Wayan Mulyawan Ni Ketut Alit Ida Setianingsih ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2024-02-27 2024-02-27 13 1 51 64 10.34010/apollo.v13i1.9733 Analysis of Language Politeness in Students and Lecturer Interactions on WhatsApp group: a Pragmatic approach https://ojs.unikom.ac.id/index.php/apollo-project/article/view/12399
This research presents an analysis of language politeness in interactions between students and lecturers on WhatsApp group. With the increasing integration of digital platforms in educational settings, understanding the dynamics of language use and politeness in these contexts becomes crucial. The study aims to investigate the strategies employed by students and lecturers to convey politeness and maintain positive interactions within a virtual learning environment. The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing discourse analysis to examine messages exchanged on WhatsApp group among students and lecturers. The data collection involved capturing and archiving conversations from WhatsApp group in English Syntax course in 2021/2022 academic year of English Department in Universitas Komputer Indonesia (Unikom). The data are analyzed using Leech’s politeness theory. According to Leech the politeness principles are divided into six, namely the tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. The results show that the percentage of conformity regarding compliance and violation of maxims with the result being 100% conform, so that politeness in language interactions between students and lecturers in WhatsApp media in the course was stated to be very polite. The findings indicate that both students and lecturers employ various politeness strategies to foster positive communication. These strategies include the use of indirect speech acts, mitigating language, politeness markers, and positive politeness strategies such as expressing gratitude and offering support. Furthermore, the analysis reveals the influence of power dynamics on language politeness. Lecturers were found to engage in a more authoritative discourse, while students often adopted deferential and respectful language. However, instances of assertiveness from students were also observed, challenging traditional power differentials and promoting a more egalitarian communication style. The implications of this research shed light on the importance of fostering respectful and polite communication within virtual learning environments. The findings can inform educators and students on effective language use to maintain positive interactions and create inclusive educational spaces. Furthermore, the study contributes to the existing literature on digital communication and politeness strategies, adding valuable insights into the specific context of WhatsApp group interactions in educational settings.

Keywords: Language politeness, Virtual Learning Environment, WhatsApp Group, Maxims
Muhammad Rayhan Bustam Syihabuddin Syihabuddin Aceng Ruhendi Saifullah ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2024-02-27 2024-02-27 13 1 65 78 10.34010/apollo.v13i1.12399 Depiction of Systemic Racism in Hidden Figures Movie by Theodore Melfi https://ojs.unikom.ac.id/index.php/apollo-project/article/view/9735
Racism is an act of differentiating behavior towards a society that is considered inferior by those who feel as superior. This study takes the four maxims theory that was proposed by Paul Grice (1975) with the aim of analyzing the data. This study uses the theory that consist of Transcribing data, Pre-coding data and Coding data, and Growing ideas, that was proposed by Zoltan Dörnyei (2007) in order to do the method of collecting data and the analyzing data. Concerning the theory, the data is transcribed from the oral form into textual form. In the pre-coding section, the data that has been transcribed is indicated to the types of flouting maxim. Then, in the coding section, the data is divided into groups of maxims. Lastly, there are explanations are made to describe how the maxims are flouted and the reasons for the characters to flout them. The findings and discussion shows that all four maxims, namely maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of manner and maxim of relation are flouted by the characters. The maxim of quality is mostly flouted, with 11 times flouted. The reasons to flout this maxim are lying, mocking, and refusing. The maxim of quantity is flouted nine times. The reasons to flout this maxim are informing, intimidating, forcing, worrying, satisfying, and forgetfulness. The maxim of manner is flouted seven times.
