Taboo Words in The Devour Gameplay Video On Kubz Scouts Youtube Channel

Abstract

YouTube is a video platform allowing many people to watch or post videos and be digital creators. YouTubers is the term used to describe digital creators who create frequent content on YouTube, including content about gameplay videos. This study investigates Taboo word utterances produced by four players (i.e., Kubz Scouts, Berleezy, Gloom, and Poiised) in Devour gameplay video posted on Kubz Scouts YouTube channel. This study adopted the mixed method approach and the theory by Battistella (2005) in analyzing the data: (i) qualitative analysis was used to elaborate the taboo words and (ii) quantitative analysis was used to count the frequency of taboo word types uttered by the player. The study found that vulgarity and profanity appear as the highest taboo word types used by the players.
